Natural colour change

Wood typically changes its colour when subjected to direct sunshine. Depending on the intensity and amount of light exposure, light woods become darker or take on a yellow tinge. Darker woods become lighter.

With smoked surfaces, the wood colour is permanently altered by a chemical reaction with the tanning agents. Oak becomes brown to dark brown/black throughout. Douglas fir becomes light brown to red-brown. The differences in colour caused by variations in the tannic acid content even within single floorboards are typical of this natural product.
